FAQs
- What ages are Finger Foods for? We generally recommend our Finger Foods for babies who are developing their pincer grasp or toddlers who still enjoy eating with their hands and prefer smaller portion sizes. Babies are typically ready to transition to Finger Foods between 8–12 months of age, but your baby may exhibit readiness signs earlier.
Many toddlers eat our Finger Foods through age 2, but you can also choose to transition them to our Kids Meals as early as 12 months, depending on your child's ability and appetite. If you're unsure whether your toddler would do better with our Finger Foods or Kids Meals, we go in depth in the question below (Which stage should I order for my toddler—Finger Foods or Kids Meals?). - Which type of meal should I order for my toddler—Finger Foods or Kids Meals? Both our Kids Meals and our Finger Foods work for toddlers. The best way to decide which meal type might work best is to ask yourself a couple questions about where your toddler is in their self-feeding process:
- Are they using (or trying to use) utensils?
- Are they showing signs of wanting more food after mealtime? (This can be a sign that they're ready for larger portions.)
- Have they tried basic finger food ingredients and seem ready for more diverse flavors and textures?
If you answered yes to these questions, your toddler is likely ready to try our Kids Meals! Our Kids Meals are similar to an adult plate but in smaller portions, perfectly sized to give your little one the nutrients they need at this stage. They’re also great for expanding your toddler’s palate and teaching them to love real, nutrient-dense foods! Some of the meals will require some parent intervention in terms of cutting bigger pieces of food down to a smaller size that you find appropriate for your little one; however, we have a variety of soft, veggie and pasta-based meals (Chicken Meatballs with Spiral Pasta & Veggies or Alfredo Bow Ties with Turkey Meatballs & Broccoli) that you may want to order as a starting point.
If you answered no to some or all of these questions, you might want to consider ordering a mix of Finger Foods and Kids Meals or just Finger Foods. Our Finger Foods are perfect for toddlers still in the earlier stages of their self-feeding journey because they offer a softer texture and smaller size (no chopping necessary!). They're also designed to be large enough to pick up with little fingers, yet small enough for soft and easy gumming and mashing without teeth.
Many of our toddler customers love to get a mix of both our Finger Foods and Kids Meals as they make the self-feeding transition, so we encourage you to consider trying both and seeing what works best! - How do I prepare Finger Foods? To achieve a texture more suitable for early eaters (8+ months), transfer the Finger Food to a microwave-safe container, add 3 Tbsp. water, and heat 40–60 sec to 165°F, then puree or mash and test temperature before serving. For eaters that are ready for whole pieces of food (10+ months), transfer the Finger Food to a microwave-safe container and heat for 20–40 seconds until internal temperature reaches 165° F.
Alternatively, you can warm Finger Foods in the oven for 5-12 minutes. - Can Finger Foods be modified for younger ages? Yes! Follow the heating instructions for 8+ months in order to create a puree or mashed texture more suitable for early eaters.
- What Finger Foods are best for early eaters? Some of our meals are more appropriate for babies just beginning their eating journey. Suited for 8+ months, our early eater favorites include a full serving of veggies, less than 150mg of sodium, and 0g of added sugar. Be sure to follow the heating instructions for 8+ months and modify each meal appropriately for your baby before serving. Look for the age callout on our Finger Food menu to find which meals work best for 8+ months.
- Can I use Finger Foods for baby-led weaning? Yes! Many families use our Finger Foods as part of a baby-led weaning or hybrid feeding approach. Finger Foods are designed for babies to pickup, hold, and explore, encouraging independence at mealtime.
- What is baby-led weaning? Baby-led weaning (also known as baby-led feeding) is when babies feed themselves instead of being fed by an adult. The child will place the hand-held food (or a preloaded spoon) into their mouth on their own. This is beneficial because:
- It allows baby to lead the way and honors intuitive eating skills from the start
- It can promote a healthy relationship with food, which can decrease the chance of picky eating and texture aversions later on.
- How much protein is in Finger Foods? We pride ourselves on making meals that that prioritize protein. The amount of protein in each jar of Finger Foods varies, but they average around 8 grams of protein per jar. The full nutrition facts panel is available for every menu item so you can review before you order.
- Where can I find nutrition information? On our menu page! Simply click the meal you’re interested in to find nutrition info, ingredients, and meal details.
